In the air-conditioning system using water as refrigerant, the Chiller is the most important detail. The choice of which Chiller is suitable for a specific project requires the design engineer to be knowledgeable about each type of Chiller. to provide the optimal plan for each type.

 1. Chiller working principle:
Chiller is a machine that produces cool water to supply to the load of the building. It is a combination of 4 basic components: compressors, evaporators, condensers and throttle valves. For evaporators water will cool the water.

2.Chiller classifications

- Absorption Chiller: Principle based on absorption chiller cycle: Understandably, Absorption bottle is as compressor, Pump is as compressor and Generator is (Steam generator) as compressor airend. The rest devices are as the cool cycle have steam compressors.

 This chiller has 3 main types : 
For these Chillers, the COP coefficient is quite small ranging from 0.6-0.8 for Single-Effect, from 0.9-1.2 for Double-Effect, from 0.9-1.1 for Direct-Fired. These chiller is not wwidely used in air conditioning work in Vietnam because of low capacity. Single-Effect can take heat from the production process to provide steam for Chiller to run. Type Double-Effect requires slightly medium pressure steam. The bottle should normally be applied in specialized boiler. The Direct-Fired integrates an additional combustion chamber, rarely based on heat source.

Clasifications chiller to compressor:

+ Piston Chiller 

This Chiller capacity is less than 200 Tons (RT). Due to the characteristics of Piston compressors such as dead volume, high noise, poor performance.Therefore Chiller uses compressor this piston is practically not used. The cooling capacity is mainly adjusted through cylinders. In addition, Piston compressors have many details, the demage is higher than that of other chillers. Therefore, this type of Chiller is often replaced by a chiller using  a screw compressor with the same cooling capacity.

+-Scroll Chiller :

Capacity range is also limited to less than 200 RT. Spiral type has much higher efficiency than Piston, Spiral type compressor has less detail than Piston type is 64%. Compact structure, smooth operation than + Chiller type using Screw compressor: Normally the power range is from 50RT to 1100 RT, in addition, the capacity of some firms may be larger. Similar to the scoll compressor, the screw compressor holds the gas on the screw groove and then compressesing them by reducing the volume of cool gas. The cold air enters into the compression room through the suction at the top of the compression room. Due to the screw compressor only 3 main parts are 2 screws and slide valve so the working life will be higher, high efficiency, quiet operation. It is able to adjust stepless load through sliding valve. Power consumption is much smaller than Chiller using Piston compressor. There are 2 main types: horizontal and vertical screw. In fact, this type is used for small and medium-sized buildings, about under 600RT.

+Chiller uses Centrifugal compressor

Capacity from 550RT to 3000RT, especially suitable for large projects. Advantages are high efficiency and reliability. However, large size due to problem of oil recovery centrifugal compressor. Evaporation flask because of its compact size and high heat transfer characteristics. This chiller can be classified according to the layout of the main details in Chiller:
+ One floor or many floors.
+ Type of wind or water cooling
+ Open or closed type
+ Direct transmission or by gear.
+ Adjust the cooling capacity according to Inlet vanes.
